چکیده

Introduction Various experiments have been performed to use MRI to directly detect magnetic fields produced by neuronal currents (termed ncMRI). However, feasibility of ncMRI has not been completely demonstrated due to limited sensitivity of MRI to neuronal currents. To increase the possibility of detecting ncMRI signal, it is necessary to improve the detection method to achieve higher detection sensitivity, and one improvement is to optimize choice of echo time (TE). The purpose of this study was to estimate the optimal TE for ncMRI experiments using gradient echo EPI pulse sequence. In this work, by modeling the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of ncMRI signal, we obtained the optimal TEs for detecting ncMRI magnitude and phase signals in-vivo. These results will assist in future ncMRI experiments for selecting the optimal TE to achieve the best detection sensitivity.

Toward direct mapping of neuronal activity: MRI detection of ultraweak, transient magnetic field changes.

A novel method based on selective detection of rapidly changing DeltaB(0) magnetic fields and suppression of slowly changing DeltaB(0) fields is presented. The ultimate goal of this work is to present a method that may allow detection of transient and subtle changes in B(0) in cortical tissue associated with electrical currents produced by neuronal activity. The method involves the detection of...

Combination of BOLD-fMRI and VEP recordings for spin-echo MRI detection of primary magnetic effects caused by neuronal currents.

In the present paper, for the first time, the feasibility to detect primary magnetic field changes caused by neuronal activity in vivo by spin-echo (SE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is investigated. The detection of effects more directly linked to brain activity than secondary hemodynamic-metabolic changes would enable the study of brain function with improved specificity. However, the dete...

Effect of Echo Time on the Maximum Relationship between Contrast Agent Concentration and Signal Intensity Using FLAIR Sequence

Introduction Contrast-enhanced fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) is one of the MRI sequences that can be used for detection and evaluation of pathological changes in the brain. In this work, we have studied the effect of different echo times (TE) on the maximum relationship between signal intensity and concentration of the contrast agent using the FLAIR sequence. Materials and Methods...

An investigation into the effect of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) echo time spacing and number of echoes on the sensitivity and dose resolution of PAGATUG polymer-gel dosimeter

Background: There are various methods to read out responses of a polymer-gel dosimeter, among which the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technique is the most common one. Optimizing imaging protocols can have significant effect on the sensitivity and the dose resolution of polymer gel dosimeters. This study has investigated the effects of the number of echoes (NOE) and the echo time spacing (ES...

Realistic models for detection of neuronal currents with magnetic resonance imaging

A great challenge facing brain research is to “see” neurons in action at high spatial and temporal resolution in the living human brain. While existing non-invasive techniques, such as electroencephalography (EEG), magnetoencephalography (MEG), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), have either poor spatial or temporal resolution, neuronal current MRI (nc-MRI) may hold the potential ...
